Golf in the 2016 Olympics

A great day for golf and the world stage! The Olympics has been accepted in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. It will be first time since 1904 that golf has been played in the Olympics. It'll be a 72-hole competition with 60 men and 60 women competing. Can't wait to see Tiger, Phil, and others play in the Olympics.

Being an avid golfer myself I of course think it's great that golf is again included. However, it's going to be the same professional golfers playing at the Olympics who already play against each other almost every weekend. In addition we already have a number of international events for the pros, i.e. the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup etc. I would have much preferred to see top talent golf amateurs from all over the world competing against each other. In the distant past the Olympic Games were only for amateurs, but nowadays it's just another media events with the same professionals that get paid huge fees for their appearance alone.

Thanks for your comment. I agree that I would have preferred to see top amateur golfers from every country, instead of their pros.

Perhaps the Olympic officials feared that the quality of the field would suffer and not attract viewers. In the United States, we're fortunate to have many very good players in the college and high school ranks.

I wonder, however, if other countries have that amount of talent at the amateur level. I do hope though that amateurs and pros alike will be competing in the Olympics.
